Herb-robert is also known as Stinking Bob on account of the powerful odour emitted when the feathery leaves are crushed. The bright pink flowers with five petals can be seen from spring through to autumn and are followed by stork’s-bill-like seedpods. As they dry the seedpods explode, flinging seeds away from the parent plant.

Water Avens

Geum rivale

Water avens is also found in woodland as well as near water; the nodding peach-coloured flowers stand out in spring. Once the flowers have been pollinated a spiky seed-head develops, each seed tipped with a fine hook. When a furry animal walks by the seeds latch on like velcro and gain a free ride until they’re dislodged.
