1 serjeant, 2 drummers and 263 R. and F. have been returned missing by the several corps of the army, British and Portuguese. It is supposed that the greater number of them lost their regiments in the course of the night, and that very few of them have fallen into the hands of the enemy.13

The immediate result of this stunning victory was that Wellington was able to close up to the Pyrenees, where he was faced with the choice of attacking either Pamplona or San Sebastian. Lacking the resources to tackle both he opted to take the latter while merely blockading Pamplona. At the end of July the revived French, now commanded by Marshal Soult, attempted to force the passes through the mountains and relieve Pamplona, only to be stopped and beaten back in a series of hard-fought actions collectively known as the Battle of the Pyrenees. On 7 October the Allies crossed into France and by December, after now forgotten battles on the Nivelle and the Nive, were at Bayonne. The war had barely months still to run and after a fierce fight at Orthes on 27 February, Wellington closed in on Toulouse and the last battle.
