Wild Indigo

Baptisia tinctoria

(Rattleweed)

This is a much branched, very scraggly perennial with shreddy bark. Although the plant grows two to three feet high, you usually find it lying down on the ground in dry, sandy places. The fruit is a small pod less than a half inch long. The branches of the plant are very flexible, so that when you shake it the pods knock against the other branches and the plant rattles. Many of the pods fall off and leave only the calyx (see detail). The names Baptisia and tinctoria come respectively from the Greek and Latin words for “dye,” for the plant was used in colonial times to produce a blue dye. True indigo dye, however, comes not from this plant but from an Asian plant, Indigofera tinctoria, also a member of the Pea family.
