Making Memories

Cloth holds memories for all of us, even more so for those of us who make it. Our affinity for cloth makes us pay more attention to color, texture, and structure than most people. Links exist between textiles and the memories made around them. We remember the fabric of the little dresses and shirts of our babies, of the shirt we wore on our favorite vacation, of the outfit we picked out for a special moment in our lives. Seeing these fabrics again calls up vivid memories.

Unfortunately, cloth doesn’t survive the ravages of time as well as those memories. We may save a treasured textile, only to unpack it years later and see that it is falling apart, has yellowed, or pests have been at it. But don’t despair—you are a weaver, and you can save that cloth, put it to good use, and preserve its link to your memories.
