How designs grow and evolve
The ability of Andean weavers to create extremely complex patterns, and to execute multiple patterns in one piece of cloth, without written records, strikes a non-weaver as almost magical. Yet the way such designs are learned and executed has an underlying logic and systematic development, as these examples show. Patterns such as these, and even ones using different pickup techniques, can then be placed side by side to form a wide fabric of remarkable intricacy, and small patterns can become elements in wide designs.
