Mr Surfacer, from Gunze Sangyo, is a combination of filler and primer that can be used with, or instead of, liquid poly to introduce a subtle surface texture. A few minutes after application, as the finish turns tacky, try stippling the surface with a clean brush to create a rougher texture.
Hairspray provides an alternative masking medium. After a base coat of ‘corrosion’, the wagon is covered in a light misting coat of extra-hold hairspray. The grey livery coats then follow.
After about ten minutes, a stiff brush is dipped in water and used to soften the hairspray, thus revealing the rust beneath.
