Chapter 20

6th August 1987

Mathew had just watched the chisel slide onto the floor from pretty much the middle of his workbench. His expression twitched, and his fingers drummed against the wooden surface like he wasn’t sure if he should react or not. Then his features set with determination, he picked the chisel up, placed it back where it had started, before picking up the chair leg he was supposed to be working on.

‘If you’re clocked in, you should be working, not messing about,’ his voice was strangely level.

‘I told you it wouldn’t work,’ I sighed.

‘You’re not seriously giving up that easily, are you Simon lad?’ Vince sounded almost scolding.

Then, before I had a chance to respond, the chisel slid across the workbench and straight onto the floor again. Mathew gave this impatient sigh, bent down, and reached for it. But before he could grab it, it slid across the floor. He went for it again, and it slid back out of his reach.

‘Stop it, right now,’ Mathew’s voice was low, and half hissed in anger. ‘I’m trying tuh work, and Sly should be doing the same.’

‘Tell him I know, but I ain’t giving up till he admits I’m here,’ Vince sounded serious, as he moved the chisel further out of Mathew’s reach.

‘Vince says he’ll stop when you admit he’s here,’ I translated.

Mathew made a less than happy noise and shot me a look like this was all my fault somehow.

‘Fine Vince, I believe you’re here,’ his voice came through heavily gritted teeth. ‘Now fuck off so I can work. And that’s tuh you as well little brother.’

‘Okay,’ I nodded, backing slowly away from him. ‘Sorry.’

‘Yeah, I’m sure you are,’ he rolled his eyes, retrieving his work tool, and turning his back on me.

‘I’m not so sure we’ve really won your brother over on this one,’ Vince sounded thoughtful, as I made my way to the workbench I shared with Joe. ‘Still I feel like we’ve tackled a difficult first hurdle, without him seriously insulting your little friend. So that has to count for something, doesn’t it?’

‘Yeah, thanks, and sorry for using you like that,’ I made my voice as low as possible in the hopes I wouldn’t be overheard. ‘Jay’s still learning tuh do stuff, and Mathew gets seriously spiky when I mention him.’

‘He knew your little friend before he died though, didn’t he? That can make a difference in situations like this.’

‘Oh… yeah, I guess I didn’t think about that,’ I sighed. ‘But even so…’

‘Now that your brothers know about your gift, you want them to embrace all parts of it. And for you that means them acknowledging and respecting the presence of someone important to you,’ he finished my thought so well it felt like he was almost reading my mind. ‘And, after giving the lad a chance, I can honestly see why. Maybe he is part demon, but he’s clearly all heart. And a good heart at that. So I’m truly sorry for any bad word I said against him.
