CHAPTER SIX

BY NINE THAT night there was nothing left for Kelly to do. Patients had been transferred, to Theatre, to wards, to other hospitals at need. A couple were in the morgue.

That was a gut wrenching she could never get used to. In emergency situations Kelly worked on the front line, but eventually surgeons, anaesthetists, paediatricians, neurologists, even grief counsellors, moved in and took over.

But sometimes Kelly thought she needed counselling herself. She felt like that now, but she’d done what she’d needed to do. When the last patient was wheeled out, Beth thanked her and told her to go home.

‘We wouldn’t have had the outcome we did without you,’ she told her. ‘And the way you hauled Emma together...your help today meant we had five doctors instead of three.’

‘Emma’s a good doctor,’ Kelly said, wishing, stupidly, that Matt was still here, but Matt was an orthopaedic surgeon, one of those who kept working after emergency imperatives had been met. He’d probably be operating until morning.

‘She’s good now,’ Beth told her. ‘Thanks to you, she worked well, and she’ll never be as terrified again. And as for you, if you’d like part-time work while you and Jessie are stuck here, just say the word. It’d be a huge pleasure to have two Eveldenes working in this hospital.’

Two Eveldenes... That was a weird concept.

She and Matt.

Something was twisting inside her. What?

Today she’d been part of Matt’s team. Matt had vouched for her and she’d worked in his hospital. Beth was referring to them as the two Eveldenes.

Strangely it felt like she had family, and the feeling was weird.

She found herself wishing she could go home with Matt now. She’d seen him as they’d wheeled the last patient out of Emergency to Theatre. He was facing multiple fractures. He’d be working all night.

And he’d looked haggard already.

He was nothing to do with her.

Wrong. He was an Eveldene.

Family?

Needing to ground herself, she headed back to Jessie’s room. Jess was deeply asleep. She sat by his bed, just watching him. Settling herself in her son’s presence.

After a while the nurse in charge of the ward popped in. ‘I’ve been sent to take care of you,’ she said, efficiency overlaid with kindness. ‘Would you like tea and a sandwich? Or something hot? The whole hospital knows what you’ve done today and we’re grateful. We can heat you some soup if you like. Anything.’

‘Thank you, no.’ She rose, feeling bone weary. There was no point in staying here. ‘I need to go home.’

‘And you’re staying with Matt. You’re his sister-in-law, the wife of his brother who died. That’s awfully sad.’

‘It was a long time ago,’ Kelly said repressively, but knowing hospital grapevines were the same the world over. She had as much chance of hiding her history as flying.

‘But still...’ The woman glanced at Jess. ‘They say he’s just like his dad, and you’ve brought him up in America but finally you’ve brought him home.’

‘This isn’t home.’

‘You just said it was,’ the woman said gently.
