Chapter 15

The sky was clear, with a swelling moon and the whole swath of Silverpelt to shed light over the hills. Onewhisker trudged up a steep moorland slope; the ground felt spongy under his paws after the heavy rain of two nights before.

Barkface padded along at his side. “Are you sure you’re up for this, Onewhisker?” he asked. “It’s a long way to the Moonpool, and I think that shoulder wound is still giving you trouble.”

“I’m fine, Barkface,” Onewhisker replied. In fact, the wound Webfoot had given him in the battle was sending deep pulses of pain down his shoulder and into his leg, but he didn’t intend to let that stop him. “I’ve waited too long for my nine lives and my name. I’m not going to wait any longer.”

But he couldn’t entirely silence the tiny voice at the back of his mind. What if—in spite of everything—Tallstar made a mistake and StarClan doesn’t want me after all?

He told himself, as he plodded along beside Barkface, that if StarClan really did reject him, he could always go back to the old forest and find Smoke and Darkkit. But if he was being honest with himself, he had to admit that he hadn’t thought much about them since the night of the battle. He felt a twinge of shame, as if he had trodden on a thorn, but he tried to convince himself that with all the troubles WindClan had suffered, his former mate and his son must be better off where they were.

With the Clan cats gone, prey must be running well in what was left of the old territories. But Onewhisker expected that Smoke would have found another Twoleg to take in her and her kit. That would be better for every cat. Kittypets don’t do well in the Clans—well, except for Firestar, but he’s an exceptional cat in all sorts of ways. Leading ThunderClan was his destiny.

Finally he and Barkface scrambled up a steep rocky slope and came to a row of thornbushes at the top. Onewhisker could hear the sound of a waterfall, and looked around to see where it was coming from.

“Follow me,” Barkface meowed.

The medicine cat thrust his way through the bushes. Onewhisker crouched down and drew his legs under him to slide through carefully, keeping his wounded shoulder well away from the thorns.

Reaching the other side, he halted and straightened up. As he saw what lay in front of him, he drew in a long breath of wonder. He was standing at the top of a deep hollow; opposite, a waterfall tumbled down into a pool. The surface glittered with the reflections of moon and stars. Onewhisker could almost feel the presence of his ancestors in this beautiful spot. It would be a good place for the medicine cats to commune with StarClan.

This feels right.

Barkface led him down the spiral path to the water’s edge. “Crouch down and touch your nose to the water,” the medicine cat instructed him. “Then StarClan will speak to you.
