Chapter 13

As Harelight barreled toward her, bearing her to the ground, Frostpaw slumped beneath him and let every muscle in her body grow limp. The force of her mentor’s attack carried him past her; Frostpaw wriggled out from underneath him and rolled upright, then launched herself up onto his back. With her claws sheathed, she raked one forepaw across his ears before jumping to the ground again.

“Did I do okay?” she asked as Harelight turned to face her.

A purr came from deep within the white tom’s chest. “I’m impressed, Frostpaw,” he told her. “Really impressed. You’ve learned that move brilliantly.”

“Yeah, it was great! You got the timing just right.”

Frostpaw spun around at the sound of her brother Graypaw’s voice, and saw him standing under a nearby tree, with Mistpaw and their mentors, Breezeheart and Icewing. She hadn’t realized that they had finished their training session and were watching her.

I’m glad I didn’t know. I would probably have messed up.

“You’re really good at this,” Mistpaw agreed. “It’s weird that Curlfeather was wrong about you being a medicine cat. But at least now that you’re a warrior apprentice, we get to spend more time together.”

“Maybe we could all be made warriors at the same time,” Graypaw mewed with an excited little bounce.

Frostpaw shook her head, feeling thoroughly embarrassed. “Oh, no, I’ll never be ready at the same time as you. I have too much to learn.”

“Well, it’s not impossible,” Icewing meowed. “Harelight tells me that you’re making very good progress.”

“You are,” Harelight agreed. “But if you want your warrior ceremony at the same time as Mistpaw and Graypaw, you’ll have to work twice as hard.”

“Oh, I will!” Frostpaw assured him fervently, hardly able to believe what her mentor was telling her. “I’ll work harder than any cat in the whole forest!”

“This I must see,” Harelight purred.

A warm glow filled Frostpaw’s body from ears to tail-tip as she and her littermates headed back toward the RiverClan camp with their mentors. The sun was shining and there was a frosty tang in the air. This was going to be a really good day. Winning praise from Harelight and the others was one of the best things she had ever felt; their words filled her with pride at how well she was learning to be a warrior. She had struggled with doubts before she could imagine this life for herself, but she was enjoying every moment of her training. It was hard to believe that she had ever thought she was meant to be a medicine cat.

Why was my mother so sure I was meant for that? Frostpaw asked herself. She remembered waking up from dreams in the nursery and telling her mother about them. Curlfeather had immediately been certain that they were visions. But all kits dream. Mistpaw once dreamed about riding up to the stars in a Twoleg monster! So why was my mother so sure that my dreams meant something?

Frostpaw gave her pelt a shake. She wasn’t going to think about that. At last she felt she had set her paws on the right path.
