Chapter 11

Nightheart felt restless in the ThunderClan hollow. After the wide openness of the valley meadows, the enclosing cliffs and forest seemed oppressive. And yet he was glad to be home. The familiar scents and pelts comforted him, and he suspected that his Clanmates respected him a little more now. After all, he’d brought back catmint, and Brightheart was already feeling better. Hadn’t Squirrelflight said that thanks to him and Alderheart, Tigerstar might stop bothering them for a while? Was it possible even she respected him more?

A fresh wind was whisking the clouds across the morning sky. It would bring rain later, but Nightheart didn’t mind. He was looking forward to being out in the forest. Squirrelflight was organizing the dawn patrols, and most of his Clanmates had already left. He shifted from paw to paw as he waited for his name to be called. Myrtlebloom was fidgeting beside him while Flipclaw paced in front, his tail swishing. From the edge of the clearing, Birchfall caught Nightheart’s eye and acknowledged him with a nod before turning back to Squirrelflight. Finleap blinked at him approvingly.

Nightheart’s chest swelled with pride. They think of me as a real warrior now. What patrol would Squirrelflight assign him to? A border patrol, perhaps? Or maybe she’d send him squirrel hunting with Lionblaze and Finleap again, and he could show them just how much he’d learned while he’d been gone.

“Fernsong.” Squirrelflight called the yellow tom’s name. “Take Ivypool and Birchfall to mark the SkyClan border.”

She’d be calling Nightheart’s name next. He puffed out his fur.

He hadn’t had to prove anything to Sunbeam. She’d treated him like a true warrior from the start, and it had given him confidence. They’d caught the rabbit without having to speak, working as though they’d trained together for moons. She’d trusted him to block the rabbit’s escape, and he’d trusted her to run it down. Hunting was far more fun without his Clanmates second-guessing his every move.

Perhaps they’d stop second-guessing him now. The medicine den’s herb store was filled with catmint because of him. He blinked eagerly at Squirrelflight, waiting for her to look at him.

“Myrtlebloom.”

He leaned forward excitedly. He was one of the last to be chosen. Was she saving him for a special mission?

“Flipclaw.”

She’d call his name next for sure.

“Go with Lionblaze and Finleap and see what you can catch around the beeches,” she told the pale tabby.

What about me? Nightheart lifted his tail. Perhaps she hadn’t noticed him. And yet, how could she miss him? Only Bayshine, Shellfur, and Fernstripe remained with him in the clearing.

“Nightheart!” His heart leaped as Squirrelflight called his name at last. Was he going to lead a patrol? He pictured himself heading out of camp, Bayshine, Shellfur, and Fernstripe at his heels.

Squirrelflight whisked her tail. “I want you to clean out Bramblestar’s den.”

He stared at her, wondering if he’d heard right. “But that’s an apprentice duty.”

“Yes,” she mewed briskly. “But since we have no apprentices at the moment, our warriors must take turns to do their chores.
