GOD’S FIRSTBORN RESTORED TO THE LAND (31:7–14)

It is difficult to identify who is addressed in this section, but since the nations are mentioned in v. 10, it could be that Yahweh is calling for all the peoples, from all the nations, to join in praising and rejoicing in the return of Israel and Judah to their land.

TRANSLATION

7 Yes, this is what Yahweh has said:

“Sing with joy31 for Jacob!

Shout for the first of the nations!

Make [it] heard! Praise! And say,

‘Yahweh has saved32 his33 people,34

The remnant of Israel.’

8 Look, I am bringing them from the land of the north,

And I am gathering them from the remotest part of the earth;

Among them will be the blind, the lame,35

With pregnant mothers, and women in labor;

Together they will return here; a great throng.

9 They will come36 with weeping;

They will pray37 as I bring them back;

I will lead them beside streams of water

On a path too smooth for stumbling;

For I am Israel’s Father,

And Ephraim is my Firstborn.”

10 O nations! Hear the word of Yahweh!

Proclaim it in distant shores! Say:

“He who scattered Israel will gather them,

He will guard his flock like a shepherd.”

11 Yes, Yahweh has ransomed Jacob

And redeemed him from the hand of those stronger than he.

12 They will come and rejoice on Zion’s height38

And thrill to the goodness of Yahweh,

The grain,39 the new wine, and the olive oil,

The sheep and the cattle.

They will be like a well-watered garden,40

Never to languish again.

13 Then maidens will dance41 and be glad,42

Young men and old as well.

I will turn their mourning into gladness;

I will give them comfort43 and joy instead of sorrow.44

14 I will give the priests45 their fill of fat things,46

While my people are satisfied with my bounty,

Declares Yahweh.
