THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK

Relationships are the canvas upon which our very lives are painted. Everything we do, think, and say seems to come from our multicolored relationships. We act like our forefathers. We are biased in our opinions because of the culture that raised us. We are recognized geographically by our speech. We are a portrait of our past associations.

Paul begins this last letter by revealing his intimate relationship with his close friend Timothy…his “beloved son.” He closes chapter 1 by sharing about another close, personal friend, Onesiphorus.

He then moves quickly, by the stroke of the pen, to remind us of the importance of a godly heritage from family relationships by mentioning his forefathers and Timothy’s foremothers.

He also shares in the last verses of chapter 1 that painful experience that came when “all who are in Asia turned away from me.” Among them were two men, Phygelus and Hermogenes, whom he called by name—revealing something more than just a casual relationship.

And nestled in the midst of these relationships of friends and family, Paul very profoundly draws our attention to that most important relationship: the one we have with God, our heavenly Father.

Good friends. Bad friends. Faithful. Unfaithful. Godly family. Ungodly family. When physical death comes to pay a personal visit, life boils down to one very critical, important relationship: the relationship we have with God the Father. Everything else is temporary. In the end, the only relationship that determines a person’s eternal destiny is the personal relationship he or she has or doesn’t have with God the Father through the Savior, Christ Jesus. No one earns salvation by works (the good things they do or the bad things they don’t do). Salvation was given to us in Christ Jesus from all eternity, according to God’s purpose and grace. Jesus is the one who abolished death and brought life and immortality to light when He appeared on this earth to die on a cross as our substitution in payment for our sins. We can live forever. We can have eternal life. We can know our eternal destiny is heaven, not hell. No wonder Paul could live his last days in the light of the glorious gospel while facing certain death. He knew that, for him, death had been abolished! Eternal spiritual separation from God had been done away with. He knew he would spend eternity in heaven. You, too, can know. Do you know where you will spend eternity? What will happen to you when you die? Heaven? Hell? Have you trusted in Jesus Christ as your personal Savior?
