ARE OUT-OF-BODY EXPERIENCES LUCID DREAMS?

The last point I want to make in this chapter is that out-of-body experiences share many features of lucid dreams. Out-of-body experiences tend to occur during sleep in the same conditions as lucid dreams. You can know you’re having an out-of-body experience while it’s occurring and can voluntarily control the experience to varying degrees. Lucid dreams and out-of-body experiences also both tend to be highly realistic or hyperrealistic. These similarities suggest that out-of-body experiences could be either a subtype of lucid dream or a closely related sleep phenomenon.

Many out-of-body experiences, as we’ve seen, occur during a relaxed and prone state. They also seem to start from either the hypnagogic state leading into sleep or the hypnopompic state between dreaming and waking. Consider Charles Tart’s description of “Miss Z,” one of the individuals he studied who had many out-of-body experiences (and who, on one occasion, according to Tart, reported correctly the random target number 25132 that Tart had hidden near the ceiling above her bed):
