Chapter Fourteen
ZACH FINISHED THE SHIFT change with reports and filling in the A-shift engine lieutenant on the previous night’s calls. It’d been a busy night with little sleep, and he was looking forward to a nap before his date.
“So,” Bull said, coming from the back with his duffle slung over his shoulder. “You check into those restaurant suggestions I gave you?”
Tonight was the musical, the date. Zach cursed himself for mentioning it. But he’d wanted something new, something special. “I was thinking more along the lines of places that take reservations.”
“Do I look like the kind of man who would recommend a place where you don’t need reservations?” Bull held out his arms, revealing his Jesus Tuxedo T-shirt with the sleeves ripped off.
“Yes. You absolutely do. And you did, so no, thanks. I found something.”
“That hurts me, man,” Bull said, going for a cup of coffee to take with him. “But good thinking. Not like you can wait at the bar when you’ve got show tickets.”
“He’s got show tickets,” Dink mocked in what Zach figured was supposed to be a high-society accent, which got a good laugh from the guys coming in and going out.
“Who’s got show tickets?” Sparky asked, coming in from dumping his stuff on his bunk.
“Romeo here.” Bull hooked a thumb in Zach’s direction. “Must be getting desperate to be going to a play.”
“Fuck you. And we’re going to dinner after the show.”
“What about flowers? Did you think of that?” Riley asked. “Women love flowers.”
Three heads turned to look at Riley.
“What? I’m just telling you what’s current. What works for…you know.” He wiggled his eyebrows.
“Oh, for the love of God. I’m not trying to get her into bed,” Zach said.
Bull laughed. “Sorry, brother, but I’m calling bullshit on that.”

PICK YOU UP AT 7:00
Nora read the text from Zach then read it again, working out that he would be at her door in exactly four hours.
“Well, that perked you right up, didn’t it?” Becca said, reading over her shoulder. “Not that you’re not usually perky, but…”
“Ahh. The big date tonight,” Scarlet said.
“Yes.” Nora angled away so neither of them would see the smile. Or tried to.
“Ha! Look at her, Scarlet. Trying to play it all cool and grinning like a guilty cat.”
“Am not.” But she was, and her face and neck felt hot. Which was weird because even if she was excited, she was equal parts nervous. “Anyway,” she said, looking for something to do with her hands. “I have absolutely nothing to be guilty for. I already made it clear I wasn’t going to sleep with him.”
“You didn’t!” Scarlet threw her head back in a full belly laugh. “Goodness, girl. You might as well have thrown down a gauntlet. Drawn a line in the sand.”
“I wasn’t goading him! I wasn’t challenging him in any way. I’ve had my I’m-not-interested shield on the entire time!”
Okay, not the entire time. She pretty much dropped the shield every time he touched her. But she had meant the thing about not going to bed with him.
