Posting to Offutt AFB

In the spring of 1975 I was posted to command the Strike Command Detachment at Offutt AFB near Omaha, Nebraska. I had been to Offutt several times so I was familiar with the operation but, once nominated, I had to have an interview with the AOC. He was renowned for his one-sided lectures. The fact that I had had, previously, the command of two units which were dispersed from their HQs had obviously passed him by and the impression that I was given was that I was barely to be trusted with the Offutt detachment. I was forty-two and had been in the RAF since I was almost sixteen so I was not best pleased with this rousing cheer of doubt from the man who had been AOC and for whom we had won an unexpected prize at the last Giant Voice. I nearly told him to stick his posting but the fact that this was likely to be my only complete accompanied overseas tour before I retired meant that I just swallowed and pressed on.
