Step 4: Link

Visual magic starts to happen when nodes are Linked together. This energizing process is fast and easy. In a flash, Webstormers see their work transformed into a cohesive idea because linking the nodes reveals the first real iteration of the web. Regardless of the tool used to Webstorm, adding the links formally establishes the conceptual hierarchy of the visual outline. Even though the layout of the subtopics visually and spatially suggests relationships, until links are established, all nodes are technically Level 1 nodes. Once nodes are linked, their hierarchical levels are established. Links also decrease the visual complexity of a diagram, so linking one area of a map helps students regain the mental energy to revisit the Webstorm and focus on other areas within the diagram that may still need to be resolved. In figure 7.8 links transform the image from a sea of bubbles into a relatively cohesive idea in progress.
