Toward a Pure Film Industry

If the locus of the production of cinematic meaning was to shift from the sphere of exhibition to the site of production, the structure of the industry itself had to be transformed. To this end, the discourse of film reform in the late 1910s was not confined only to questions of motion picture aesthetics but also inquired into what kind of industry was necessary to support the production of pure films. Katsud no sekai, for example, devoted the September 1917 and October 1918 issues to analyzing the industry, and Kinema Record, calling itself, in English, “the Illustrated Leading Cinema Trade Journal in Japan,” followed the model of United States motion picture trade journals and appointed itself the industry’s business advisor. While not all of its proposals became reality, evident in its statements is a new conception of cinema’s productive base.
