BENEDICTâREAL LIFE STEPS IN.
I was born into a world of wealth and privilege. Despite the break with the guild, my parents were successful business owners, and they had passed that down to me. No expense had been spared with my education and upbringing. Being a natural athlete and a bright student, I had excelled at everything, from math and science to music and art.
I never worried about where my next meal would come from, or even if I would get into the best school. It was a given that I would attend one of the top universities in the country and that I would study business and finance.
My parents never even considered that I wouldnât be the brightest in the class or that I wouldnât go on to achieve greatness in both my personal life and in the business world.
I didnât know what it was like to be uncertain. I managed a half a million dollar merger while ordering my morning coffee. I had a corner office because I was damn good at my job. I knew the industry and had been honored on numerous occasions as the most promising young executive in the country.
So, as you can imagine, I didnât lose. It wasnât even in my vocabulary. And yet on this terrible day, I had lost not only part of my freedom due to the guild, but I had come home to find Daphne missing, and Kat sprawled naked in my bed.
The nerve of the woman was astounding. We were involved in a couple scenes ages ago. She had never been to my home; much less been given a key. What I hadnât known was that she and my downstairs neighbor were friends.
Nor did I know how proficient she was at picking locks. It had taken a quick phone call to Thomas to clean up the situation. Kat was likely even now being booked on breaking and entering charges. Thomas would ensure that my name never entered into the equation and the riffraff from the apartment underneath mine was being evicted.
It helps to own the building you are living in.
However, despite how truly irritating it was to straighten out that situation, it wasnât what had me completely and utterly out of my mind. That reason was sitting next to me, her shaking hands cradled between mine, and her beautiful face pale as a ghost.
I had no idea what Kat had said to her. Nor did I understand why she ran away from me. When I first learned of it, I was furious. I had the irrational fear that she had disappeared. How the woman had become essential to my happiness in such a short time, I never could explain. All I knew was that if she was gone, everything was wrong.
I tried to tell myself that I was just upset that she hadnât fulfilled her end of the contract. I didnât want to think about what would happen when the thirty days were through.
All I know is that those moments were some of the worst of my life.
