After we both took a shower—separately, despite Blaine’s objection—I crashed onto the couch in the living room and began channel surfing. Virtually everything on T.V. that was somehow Christmas-related, save for reality shows, sports, and some good old-fashioned horror films.

Blaine returned from the kitchen with a couple of drinks in hand just as in time to see Christian Bale level an axe down on Jared Leto. “Nothing says the holidays like American Psycho,” he laughed, noting the channel’s Christmas-themed logo positioned in the bottom corner of the screen.

I eyed the cocktail he offered. “This is your solution?”

He laughed, planting himself in the chair across from me. “Hey, you may not be able to drink your problems away, but it can definitely push them into the background for a short while.”

For how quickly our bodies processed liquor, that ‘short while’ was quite literally that. Short.

“What is this?” While Blaine had what looked like a simple serving of Scotch, my dark red drink had been prepared with ice and even a lemon wedge.

“Blackberry Vanilla Lemonade,” he said proudly, “with Vodka.”

Cautious, I took a sip.

And then another.

And another.

Not only was it delicious, but I could feel the liquor hit my bloodstream almost instantly. I sank into the cushions, spreading out so that my entire body lay across the couch. For a girl who never drank, my alcohol tolerance was nonexistent, so it took next to nothing for me to become tipsy.

“Can I tell you a secret?” I asked. Yep, just like that, my mental filter had apparently checked out for the evening, because I just blurted it out.

“Well, paint me intrigued.” Blaine gave a flourish of the hand. “Proceed.”

I sucked in a breath. “Reese and I…aren’t together.”

Blaine drew his lips in, trying not to laugh.

I chucked a pillow at his face. “That’s not funny!”

“Well, I’m sorry, but maybe you need to brush up on your definition of ‘secret,’” because it isn’t much of one if everyone already knows.”

I scowled, but he snatched up the remaining pillow on the couch before I had the chance to hit him with it. “That’s not the secret, you jerk.”

Blaine held up his hands, placating, despite still having my pillow.

“A few days back, I was lucky enough to actually talk with Carly on the phone for a little bit before the call dropped out. She and Reese have been spending a lot of time together these past couple of months, and they really seem to get along with each other. So I asked her if she would ever consider dating him. Of course, she responded with the typical, ‘no, we’re just friends’ bit…”

“And…you didn’t believe her?” Blaine guessed.

“That’s just the problem. I did.”

“I’m not following.”

I groaned, flinging an arm over my face, a bit more dramatically than necessary. “Carly is exactly who Reese needs. Someone who knows about demons and Hellhounds and dark magic, but someone who also isn’t involved in it. He wants someone normal, and—” I threw out my other arm in Blaine’s direction, as if he, of all people, could forget it was covered in his runes “—I’m not that girl.
