3ADD THE TRANSPARENT GLAZES AND HIGHLIGHTS

Lay out Titanium White, Indian Yellow Deep, Permanent Alizarin Crimson, Transparent Maroon and Cadmium Yellow Hue; stir in a drop of drying medium with each. Mix Indian Yellow Deep and Permanent Alizarin Crimson to create a transparent gold. Brush this over the lighter areas of hair. Brush Transparent Maroon over the darker areas. Add a few highlights and strands of lighter hair with a mix of Titanium White and Cadmium Yellow Hue. Paint the dark areas with more Transparent Maroon. Use nos. 4 and 6 watercolor rounds. Blend with a ½-inch (12mm) comb, stroking it in the direction of the hair flow. Reinforce the darkest areas with Burnt Umber.

ARTIST’S TIP

Think of shiny, wavy hair as ribbons. It has highlights and shadows as it turns in and out of the light.
