STORING
If you manage to dry the bulbs sufficiently they will store in a cool, ventilated shed until March.
POTENTIAL PROBLEMS
Shallots suffer from the same pests and diseases as onions.
HOW MUCH TO GROW?
You will only need to plant a few shallots in a tunnel or greenhouse to get some shallots before the outdoor crop is ready in August.
VARIETIES
Unfortunately there is only a limited number of varieties available in garden centres. Just make sure the sets are of good quality.
If available try the following varieties:
• Red Sun (deep red brown skin, very early, excellent flavour).
• Golden Gourmet (yellow skin, firm even bulbs, stores well).
