“Eruption” might very well be the greatest instrumental ever recorded in the history of the electric guitar. The virtuosic tour de force shattered preconceptions about what the guitar was capable of and made the electric guitar the coolest accessory of the last quarter of the 20th century. After “Eruption” came out, almost overnight, the shred era began and the face of electric guitar has never been the same since. We’ll take a look at this masterpiece section by section, as primarily demarcated by dive bombs and whammy-bar antics.

After the opening A5 power chord, palm-muted and pinch harmonic-infused blues bends set the stage for some ferocious hybrid A blues scale/Dorian repeating licks that mix in open strings. This is a hard lick to play if you are not used to pulling off with the first finger. If you’ve already worked on “Hot for Teacher,” you might be comfortable with this technique. If not, practice just a small fragment of the pull-off figure, say, from the B string’s 8th fret to the 5th fret to the open string, using the fretting hand’s pinky and index fingers and going slowly at first to develop stamina and evenness.

A repeating lick in measure 6, similar to the shape that Eddie would later use on the follow-up instrumental “Spanish Fly,” leads to the chromatically filled-in A Dorian scalar descent in measure 7, which rounds out the passage. The section is capped off by a stream of wicked whammying.
