White lines blurred. The thud…thud…thud…of the wheels against the bridge was oddly soothing. I didn’t plan to come here, didn’t plan to be anywhere, except alone.

My phone rang…the caller ID splashed across the stereo. Alexander. I reached out and pressed the button, sending the call to voicemail.

Not now.

Not now.

I knew exactly what would happen if I answered. The whole mess of what would follow played out inside my head. He’d be soft, soothing, whispering all the things I needed to hear. He’d make me tell him where I was…and he’d come find me. He’d drive me home in silence with one hand on my thigh…he’d carry me upstairs. To our room…

To our bed.

And make love to me, soft and gentle. He’d take me to perfect heights and leave me stranded in misery. I couldn’t go back there, not to the numbness of what our life had been before. Not to all his late night meetings with men I’d rather not know. I’d rather be alone. I’d rather be…what? Dead? I’d had sweetness with him. I’d had plain, boring sweetness.

But that wasn’t what I wanted, was it? My thoughts lingered in the darkness and the shadows, and the cold. Leather shone in my mind. The brush of a finger against my cheek before it moved to my temple.

I let myself be taken there, back to that alley before my world turned upside down. The steering wheel turned, and the car followed.

You’re in pain. I can help with that.

My throat tightened at the words.

I didn’t know why, just the sound of them…the promise.

Pain tore through my chest. Could my mystery lover help me now? My chest sank until I thought my ribs would snap. Could he take away the last eight months with a brush of his fingers? I tapped the brakes and pulled the wheel to the left, stopping against the curb.

I wanted him to take me away from all this pain…this misery. I leaned forward, my head against my arms on top of the wheel. My foot bounced on the brake, shuddering and shaking, inching the car forward.

Just drive. Turn at the water…plunge from the bridge. There was only misery now, only fighting and the grappling for control. There was only suffering for me. For the sake of my family name.

Knuckles rapped against the side window, making me cry out and jerk my gaze toward the glass. A man peered in, his face familiar. “You just gonna park there and scare off the customers?”

Arran. His name came to me. Dark eyes, flashing with silver. One brow rose as he narrowed in on my face. Some kind of emotion flickered in his eyes. Surprise. Concern? “You want to come inside?” he called on the other side of the glass. “You look like you could use a drink.”

He caught the tremble as I shoved the car into park and killed the engine. I didn’t know why I was here…for some reason I didn’t care. I was close to where I needed to be, dancing along that feeling of knowing…of wanting.
