Chapter Seven The Reading

Kara didn’t think he would let her leave, and he didn’t. He drove her home. He walked her into the tiny apartment and stood by the door like he might not leave. She’d barely slept in the night and even then, she felt like he’d possibly stayed standing outside her door all night. She could feel him.

There was no other explanation. What Drake had said about meeting her coworker, Lexlie, seemed to be real. She could feel that it was more than just attraction felt for Rob Reeve. Vampire or not, he was drawn to her and her to him. Being away hurt. Looking on the net, she found where many people, with no indication of any special circumstances like psychic powers or vampirism, felt their soul mates the day they’d met them. Animal magnetism some called it. Whatever it was, it was real. She wasn’t sure she wanted to go two whole weeks away, but she wanted to get to know him first. Be sure he didn’t turn back into the bear they said he was previous to meeting her.

The next night, he was at her door to take her to his club to work. Unfortunately, she owned little in the clothing department other than white linen button-ups and skirts. Her restaurant pants were out of the question for a nightclub. She did own one red skirt with a split clean up the side of it that she planned to save for Saturday night. She didn’t know why the designation came to her, just that she wanted to surprise him and see what it got.

The first night of work went fine. She even made a hit. One guy at the bar was said to have visited every night that week and refused to cut himself off. It wasn’t that odd for a bar, but she targeted him for something to do. Getting paid for it, she didn’t want to seem lazy.

She sidled up to the sleaze making him aware of her smile and worthiness for attention. His young face hid the fact that he was an evil man when the night hours came. Touching his skin, she learned that he’d left Club Toxin the night before and went straight to the all night bar barn as most suburb patrons called it but also known for it’s seedy characters. Inside, he’d met a man who wanted to off all of vampire kind. She knew this because he vividly made fun of them by making a horrid image with a less than okay message displayed on his phone. It flashed over the images Kara saw several times basically blaring his plan. She’d just confirmed their existence and this man wanted them all dead.

Kara stood and managed to move away from the man with the intentions of heading to Rob’s office where she saw him enter last. He’d spent most of the night sitting at a corner single booth with a drink, watching her. Prey and predator. Cat and bird.
