Chapter Seven

THE VIGILANTE HAD escorted the wagon driver, the widow lady and the two golden haired sisters from the café and into the hotel roughly an hour after ordering their meals. After consuming the better part of a whole pot of coffee, Moon was still alert but no less anxious.

The small voice inside his head kept warning him of what was going to occur and Moon never ignored the voice. Over the years it had saved his bacon numerous times and the vigilante had learned to always listen to it.

The mysterious vigilante adjusted the leather lace around his long silver beard thoughtfully as his mind raced. He had taken a risk by allowing Doyle and his fellow troopers to get themselves drunk but if he had done otherwise he knew that was probably even more risky. Moon was in command of the small group but had no official rank.

If he had tried to prevent the soldiers from having a bit of fun for the first time in days since leaving Fort Hook, it might have gotten even more dangerous.

Moon was not afraid for himself but he had to think of the three females and keeping them as safe as possible. They were utterly reliant upon him.

He could not let them down.

This was a situation which he was not used to and had no experience of. He was a vigilante who brought his own brand of justice to those who had escaped the law.

Uriah Moon vowed this would not happen.

The hotel lobby was lit by three lamps and cast enough illumination for them to follow Ken Mason up the staircase to the upper floor in single file. Cal White led the way with June and the girls behind him as the vigilante followed with his exposed pearl handled gun grips jutting from his hand-tooled holsters.

Moon was ready to draw as his eyes darted from shadow to shadow in search of unseen adversaries. He was like a coiled sidewinder ready to strike at anything which posed a threat to either him or those he was protecting.

Uriah Moon knew that the four soldiers who had gone to the saloon earlier would return well liquored up and that usually meant trouble.

If they started anything, he was determined to stop them by force. Unlike the fight back at the fort, this time he would use his Peacemakers and gun them down. Moon was more than willing to prove that his merciless reputation was true.

One by one the hotel owner opened the room doors and handed the keys over. The rooms
