Chapter Nine
Luciferâs Lair sounded like a mythical creation dreamt up in the fertile imaginations of whiskey fueled men as they sat around a campfire, but it was real. Very real. The high rugged mountains and mesas which stretched between two very different countries had long ago been named after the supernatural demons thought to occupy its natural defenses.
The Apaches believed that this place was a portal to another world. A world where monsters of unimaginable power existed, but the truth was far more frightening.
For hundreds of years the nomadic natives of this harsh land had managed to survive within its seemingly deadly boundaries and remained a thorn in the side of their enemies. For few if any of the people that were regarded as invaders by the Apaches ever dared to enter the labyrinth of canyons which wove a web of solid stone and protected those who chose to dwell beneath its towering rocks, ever survived the Lair itself. Those that did survive usually fell victim to its protectors.
The Apaches were a swift and merciless foe. They were the guardians of this unholy natural place and viewed all others who dared to enter its canyons as trespassers.
Luciferâs Lair was in fact the very heart of the perilous rocky formation which had lured hundreds of unsuspecting souls to their deaths upon entering its maze of canyons. The legendary Termanjo and his warriors had built their stronghold at the very center of the rocky impasse. The tribe had constructed scores of adobe structures in the very center of the Lair and created a safe haven from the outside world for themselves and their families.
They knew that the uninvited would perish long before they discovered a safe route out of the Lair. Then roughly a year earlier the great Termanjo had encountered a fearsome character unlike any other of the white men who dared to venture into the legendary place known simply as Luciferâs Lair.
Spangler Brough was a man who had lived his life exploiting every other human being he had ever encountered. It had been a profitable existence until the army had spent a small fortune building the massive Fort Hook. The fortress had put an end to Broughâs unhindered activity at transporting cheap Mexican silver ore north and selling it for unimaginable profit in the southern cities scattered just north of the border. Suddenly at a stroke, his wagons could no longer travel through the ominous canyons without interference from the cavalry. Yet Brough was not a quitter and refused to allow the northern powers to put him out of business. A business he had honed with the assistance of Termanjo and his fearless warriors.
In reality, the Apache chief was probably a better businessman than Spangler Brough had ever been. He had ensured that his people were supplied with the very best provisions by his white cohort in exchange for safe passage of the silver ore through Luciferâs Lair.
Termanjo had also ensured that Brough purchased as many white girls and womenfolk his braves captured in raids upon settlerâs homesteads.
