Chapter 7

LOWELL CONTINUED his banter. He could see that Jeremy was upset, but his entire attention was focused on getting them out of the apartment. Between the television and his banter, he hoped he’d thrown off anyone who might be listening, and there was no doubt in his mind that someone was listening. Why, he wasn’t sure. Lowell hadn’t thought it was possible that he’d been found, but that was now a distinct possibility. He’d only been to Jeremy’s a few times, though, and not in days. Something else was going on, and he needed some time to figure out what it was. He also needed some help, and the only person he could turn to for that kind of help was Bull.

He finished their little “encounter” and turned down the television. Then they quietly left the apartment with the television still on. He led the way and went into the laundry room, where there was a back door to the building. As soon as they were outside, they both put up their umbrellas, and Lowell led them down the back alley toward one of the main streets. They hailed a cab and got inside. Lowell gave instructions to take them to his hotel and settled back on the seat. “It’s going to be fine. I won’t let anything happen to you,” he whispered in Jeremy’s ear. This was what he’d been afraid of all along, that his life would somehow intrude on Jeremy. He deserved better than this.

“What’s going on?” Jeremy asked, and Lowell glanced toward the driver. Jeremy nodded his understanding, and Lowell pulled out the phone, looked up Bull’s number, and made the call, hoping he would answer.

Thankfully, he got Bull. “Jeremy needs your help,” he began.

“What’s going on?”

“I’m not sure. But can you come to my hotel? I need to explain where we can’t be overheard.” He explained which hotel, and Bull said he’d be there as soon as he could. “Call me at this number, and we’ll meet you.” He didn’t want to say the room number to the driver. Lowell had learned to hold everything as close to the vest as possible. He hung up and tugged Jeremy to him. “Bull is going to join us in a while.”

Jeremy nodded and leaned close, but his body was filled with tension. Lowell knew Jeremy was getting a good dose of what his life was like. This was exactly what he’d wanted to keep him from. The cab ride didn’t take long, and they got out at the hotel. Lowell paid the driver in cash, and then they hurried inside.

A crowd of business people packed the lobby. The hotel he was staying in was very nice, and as Lowell had found out, connected to a downtown shopping center and office complex, so there was always a lot of traffic in the lobby area. That made it relatively easy to come and go without being noticed. They reached the elevators, and Lowell pressed the button for the twelfth floor.
