The Altamont tragedy ended in the courts, final symbolic proof that Mick Jagger was no longer a rebellious hippy but had now become a straight-forward millionaire businessman to whom the Rolling Stones was a commodity. He sued the Sears Point International Raceway for more than £25 million, alleging breach of contract and fraud. Californian landowners with ranches near Altamont countersued the Rolling Stones for £2,450,000.

Nevertheless, the debacle did make an effective movie. It was called Gimme Shelter, and true to their promise, the Maysles brothers got it out before Woodstock.

I saw it with all the Stones in a small preview theatre in Soho. After they’d argued about who Meredith had really been trying to shoot, Mick turned to Keith and said, “Flower power was a load of crap, wasn’t it? There was nothing about love, peace and flowers in ‘Jumpin’ Jack Flash’, was there?”
