Chloe had been away from organized religion for years. She still recalled the definition of faith. “Faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.”

“Right.” Sam nodded. “You don’t go unarmed, though. Right here, nothing conventional can harm him or change the course he’s on.”

Scanning the pages, Chloe found another clue. “No weapon made so sharp as the heart. No shield so strong as affected affection. What the hell?”

“It means I can shoot him in the head as many times as I want. Nothing I use, including nuclear warheads, will kill him. Something else, some other weakness is how we get under his defenses.”

An idea blossomed in Chloe’s mind, then spread roots to her heart. She didn’t dare utter a word because the notion seemed simple and foolish. She didn’t want Sam to laugh at her when he still held onto endless anger.

“A kiss of death?” Sam asked, as agitated at the idea of her kissing Tourelle as she was repulsed by such a moment. “Rends the veil between devil and man.”

“Wait, what’s the last bit again?” Her head popped up. “Between mankind and the netherworld or the battle between good and evil inside a person? Being?”

Sam rubbed the back of his neck, and she promised herself they’d take a break soon. His answer seemed doomed. “I think mankind and the netherworld. Tourelle has never been a man. He can’t be conflicted the way men can.”

Her hope closed in on itself. She wanted the other answer, and Sam’s reasoning relied on Michael’s assertion fallen angels didn’t reproduce because they were cast out as spiritual beings.

“I’m getting all twisted up in theology,” she muttered. “Do you feel like we’re getting anywhere?”

“I think we generally know how things unfold.” He stretched his long legs under the table. “After we get in the door, I step aside and let you do your magic.”

Laughter bubbled up and escaped, releasing pent-up tension. She kicked him. “Ass.”

Sam was her magic, she knew as much, and whatever happened when Tourelle got around to calling her out, she needed Sam by her side, no questions asked.

Faith, yes. Faith in each other first and foremost.

“Let’s check on Michael,” she stood and stretched. They’d only been a couple hours, and she felt as if days had passed. “See if he’s done being mad at you.”

“Me?” Sam snorted. “It’s you he doesn’t like.”

Sam slid an arm around her as they walked through the lobby to the bar, Chloe nursing another thought. They were missing a verse, she felt sure, at the end.

And she thought Michael knew where to find those magical words. They weren’t on the printout from Guardian Jane, and they seemed absent from this book. Michael certainly didn’t seem to have a care in the world. He sat at the end of the hotel bar, a half-finished whiskey sour in front of him, holding court with anyone else who happened to wander in.

“He’s impossible,” Sam muttered, his jaw clenched tight. “For someone with much to hide, he loves an audience, doesn’t he?”

Chloe straightened her spine.
