His mouth worked, but nothing came out. He didn’t have the words. If the woman wanted to argue,

he’d sit here and debate until she was satisfied. Just then, if she’d wanted the moon, he would have gone

to get it for her.

“I’m just…glad you’re awake.” His voice emerged harsher than he’d intended, but it was such a wonder

to see those green eyes open and focused on him.

“I am.” She blinked and ran her fingertips over the sheets. “I shouldn’t have woken up, Hunter. I mixed

that poison myself.”

He nodded, reaching out to fold her hand in his. “The medics…the medics said we may have gotten to

you just in time. The cold and the fact that you were naked slowed the spread of the poison. They did

what they could, but after three days, they didn’t think you’d make it. That’s when I brought you

ho—here.”

He’d almost saidhome . He’d brought her home. It was so right to have her here. Those first few days,

he’d come in, paced the echoing silence, but couldn’t sleep in a bed that smelled of her. The whole

penthouse was covered in her scent, but it was empty, barren. There was no laughter here, no life. There

was nothing without Delilah.

His mate, the woman he loved, the woman who’d been so certain he’d leave her to die, she’d poisoned

herself.

His gut fisted at the thought, an echo of sheer agony ripping through him. She thought she meant nothing

because he’d been too afraid to tell her the truth—that she meant everything. That he now measured his

life by the moments he spent in her presence, that he couldn’t see beyond the pain of losing her to even

imagine an existence without her in it.

“Don’t ever try to leave me again, Delilah.” The words emerged little more than a tortured whisper.

Moisture flooded his eyes as the reality ofher finally sank in. She wasn’t going to die, the warmth of her

hand in his wasn’t a fleeting sensation while the life slowly drained from her slim body. She was here, she

was alive, she was talking to him. He closed his eyes briefly. Deus help him if she was ever in danger

again, let alone injured.

She narrowed her gaze at him. “I was kidnapped—you can’t blame me for that.”

“That wasn’t what I was talking about and you know it.” He stroked his fingers down the back of her

hand.

“I know.”

He swallowed, unable to stop the painful words from tumbling from his lips. “You thought I’d leave you

to be raped and butchered by him.”

“It wasn’t—I didn’t—” Her eyes closed for a moment, and she swallowed. “I couldn’t let him do that to

me. It was just like before, only I was tied down, and there was no Lorelei, no Hunter, no one to help.

So, I took the only way out I had.” Her voice tripped over a sob. “I didn’t want the last thing I

remembered to bethat with him, instead of making love withyou .”

“Delilah…” He needed so badly to hold her, his arms shook. He sat beside her gingerly, sliding his hand

over her silken hair.
