Chapter Thirteen
There was no doubt in William’s mind that Heidi was fake sleeping. He might’ve only known her for a single—very long-seeming—day and night, but he’d already witnessed her real sleeping pattern. Twice. When she was out, she was out like the dead. Like all that weight of anxiety exhausted her to the point of no return, and her body sought a rest it just couldn’t get when she was awake.
So he knew that right then, she was far from unconscious. Each bump they went over made the corners of her eyes tighten. Every few seconds, her hands squeezed on the bag she still held in her lap, and when her phone had chimed to life, he’d seen her flinch an acknowledgement.
The only question was why. He wasn’t sure what had suddenly soured her mood. One moment they were joking about the three-day-old sandwiches in the gas station, the next she was calling him an enigma. When clearly what she’d actually meant was arsehole. Or worse.
And maybe you shouldn’t care, pointed out a voice in his head, which he immediately answered with, But that doesn’t change the fact that I do.
He stole another quick look. Heidi’s hands were tightening on the bag again, and her jaw ticked. She was definitely, one 100% awake.
He reckoned that whatever was bothering Heidi had to have something to do with Jules, though he couldn’t say what, specifically. It made him want to scratch his head. He’d gone out of his way not to talk about his former fiancée, actually. Mostly because his gut told him that he wouldn’t like it if Heidi had gone on about one of her exes. In fact, it would’ve made him downright annoyed. Just thinking about it irritated him. Sent his mind into an unreasonable tailspin.
Did Heidi have a significant ex? She said she hadn’t dated in more than a year. Was it because she didn’t have to date? Did she have a significant other? Was that the real reason she was fighting the attraction between them? He was sure she felt it as strongly as he did. It was evident in the way she looked at him. Obvious in the rapid beat of her heart when he got close, and in the shortening of her breath when they touched. So he’d been stupidly assuming the invisible barrier between them was all about him and his mission. But suddenly, Heidi in the arms of another man was all he could think about. Her soft, thick thighs. Her warm lips. Those beautifully dark eyes. All focused on someone else. As unreasonable as it was, he couldn’t stand the thought. The longer he drove, the worse it got. It really could be true. He hadn’t taken the time to ask.
“Do you have a boyfriend?”
The question slipped out abruptly, and apparently it was as unexpected for Heidi as it was for him. From the corner of his vision, he saw her eyes fly open, all pretense of sleep gone in a heartbeat.
“What was that?” she asked, sounding like she thought she’d heard wrong.
