Restoring relaxed and connected family time

Today, family time is in short supply. All children need their parents to be available, not just a few designated moments during the day or week, but all the time. A loss of family connectedness can lead to health problems, such as asthma, ulcers, heart disease, anxiety, depression, suicide, drug abuse, irritable bowel syndrome, and others. We need close family connections to buffer the day-to-day stresses of both parents and children.

Eat together—every day. Insist on gathering at the table, even if someone is not hungry. At least enjoy each other’s company.

Protect family day—similar to a date night with your spouse, family day should be sacred—the one day of the week that you all spend together, without friends tagging along to dilute the family social interaction.

Refuse homework if your kids are in school.

Resist encroachment of activities and practices on special holidays, birthdays, and family get-togethers.

Recognize and celebrate the rights of passage—birthdays, special occasions, high school graduations, achievements like getting driver’s license, and university children coming home for holidays.

Reconsider the value of individual activities outside the home. They take away valuable family conversation time, sharing fun, and learning together. Is it worth giving up? You only have your child for 18 years.
