Alliance or no, the intent manner Nathan was searching her face made Logan shiver. As did the velvety softness of his voice when he spoke. From recent experience, whenever she heard that tone, she was in serious trouble. “You’re a lucky girl, Miss Dean. For I have a terrible habit.”

“What habit?” Logan didn’t take her gaze from him, ready to freeze him at the slightest move.

“Of killing anyone who stands in my way. Or knowing too much.”

Okay, time to go. She side-stepped him. “Well, anyway, I’m glad you killed them. The ones who did this to you.” Again, he blocked her escape. “A truce, right?” She met his eyes, still not willing to immobilize him, not when she needed him. “You do recall our mutually beneficial agreement, Nathan?” He leaned in closer, his gaze following the curve of her throat. “Or have you forgotten about Bart?”

Now his tone turned shrewd. “No, I haven’t forgotten. But I do not see my benefits in this arrangement of ours. Perhaps you can remind me?”

“I’m getting rid of Bart for you. Does that ring a bell?”

“Yes, your empty promise. But there has been little advancement in that area. Nor have you been forthcoming about Clinton’s plans. And it’s been days. Days.” His fingers slid down into her cleavage and she slapped them away to his deep, mocking laugh.

“When it’s done, you’ll be the first to know.” But there was a question waiting at the end of her tongue. There might come a day, she swore, when she’d have enough self-control to not say stupid things.

Today was not one of those days. “Why were you at the glen, Nathan? Were you there to kill Ian, or to help him?” He chuckled, low and deep.

“I was there to ensure my future stayed intact. Something you handled quite efficiently for me. Seeing you in action was… well, let me say, you are poetry in motion, Miss Dean.”

“I see, so you were there for your own reasons. There wasn’t a meeting at Bart’s, or a bounty?”

“Oh, there were both, but since I saw you with my own eyes, I skipped the meeting. Who needs a boring replay when you can get it firsthand?” His knowing regard drilled into her. “You seemed to not quite—be yourself, for a few bloody moments while you wielded those knives like some crazed Celtic Valkyrie. And I am curious why Lazarus froze in place before you made him disappear?” His finger traced a long, wavering trail back down her trembling throat. “Yes. Extraordinarily interested in that.”

She’d like to know more about what happened that night as well. “We all have our trade secrets. I won’t pry into yours, don’t expect me to reveal mine.”

“A bit short on trust, are we, Miss Dean?”

“No shorter than you are. Funny, isn’t it, how we can work together without trusting one another?”

“Oh, I trust you.” He had her trapped now, but not as helpless as he imagined. “Perhaps more than I should. Tell me one thing, Miss Dean.
