CHAPTER 8
The Doberman was all aired and fed. The apartment was in order and Allison had bathed and put on fresh clothes. It was still only one o'clock in the afternoon. Lydia still hadn't shown up yet but that didn't mean much. She might not be coming home until nearly dinner time. The long afternoon stretched out before Allison with nothing to do.
She didn't feel in the least bit tired. Odd, after not sleeping and all that sex. Yet she felt good, alive and tingly and full of energy.
But it's all probably a temporary illusion, she told herself. Better to try and take a nap while I can. Lydia might feel like going out tonight and she'll be furious if I'm too tired.
She forced herself to lie still on the big bed. It was obvious to her that sleep would never come, she was too filled with energy. But, minutes after she closed her eyes, she fell into a deep sleep.
* * *
It was dark when she awoke. She switched on the lamp beside the bed. The small bulb cast a soft light over the room, making it look warm and cosy. Allison stretched luxuriously.
She could hear rain beating against the windowpanes. Gusts of wind howled. It was a good night to stay home. A good night to just laze around and listen to music.
She was too comfortable to get up and put records on the phonograph. Instead, she turned on the bedside radio.
A medley of schmaltzy show tunes was being played by one of those big orchestras with lots of violins. Real cornball stuff and just right for her mood.
The record came to an end. An announcer cut in to announce the station's call letters and, "Now, time for our eight o'clock news summary."
Eight o'clock! She had no idea she had been sleeping that long. And where the hell was Lydia? It wasn't like her to stay away this long without calling.
Allison was worried. Lydia was more capable of taking care of herself than any three other people on earth put together. There was really no need to be concerned. But still, something might have happened to her. What with the liquor and the marijuana, Lydia had been pretty high last night. She might have had an accident with the car.
Better to check with Valerie first. Could be that Lydia was still sleeping it off.
She dialled the number. The phone rang three times. Then a voice cut in to inform her that the number she had dialled had been temporarily disconnected and that this was a recorded announcement.
Allison hung up the phone. She wondered why Valerie had had the phone taken out. Couldn't be that she hadn't paid her bill. Valerie made a small fortune for herself from her combination brothel and hotel.
Lydia had been a client of Valerie's for years. She really dug the crazy setup up there. She liked feeling that she was really one of the whores Valerie kept available in the rooms which men rented for an hour or more.
