REFLECTION

1. Has your team worked with the concept of “power standards,” identifying those that are enduring, can be leveraged for other learning, and are essential for the next level of instruction (Reeves, 2005)? The idea is to narrow what is to be taught so that all students can master these power standards within the school year—a “guaranteed and viable curriculum.” Work collaboratively with the grade-level standards in a content area and apply these criteria. Often, this exercise provides both focus and a sense of efficacy that there will be time to cover the essentials.

2. The four major issues covered in Chapters 3 through 6 all involve polarities related to Part (freedom, uniqueness, initiative, customization) AND Whole (equality, connectedness, synergy, standardization). These are always part of distribution systems such as education and other public goods. Can you think of other “solutions” in education that aren’t working because they are actually part of these polarities?
