the universal manicure

Giving yourself a manicure not only saves time and money—it’s also a great way to unwind after a hectic day. After all, this is one of the few times you’re actually forced to sit still. The biggest trick to attaining flawless, chip-free results is to give yourself loads of time. Wait until your favorite television show is on, and take care of any hand-related tasks (doing dishes, paying bills) before you sit down with your polish. You want to allow your nails to dry for an hour, if at all possible. Here’s how to proceed.

1. Clean up. Using a cotton ball soaked in nonacetone remover (it’s less drying than conventional formulas), wipe away all traces of existing polish.

2. Find your shape. With a fine-grade nail file, file the nails in one direction to the desired length and shape—rounded squares are not only flattering, but prevent weak nails from breaking.

3. Buff them down. Use a soft buffer to smooth the surface of each nail. But don’t overdo it, or you’ll risk weakening your nails.

4. Help your hands. Soak your fingers in a bowl of warm, soapy water for five minutes, then use a hand or body scrub to exfoliate your hands. Rinse, then slather your hands with moisturizing cream.

5. Tidy your talons. Brush cuticle oil on the base of each nail. Use an orangewood stick to gently push back the cuticles (don’t cut them), then wrap cotton around the stick, dip it in polish remover, and whisk it over the nails to dissolve surface oils that can keep polish from adhering.

6. Smooth out the rough spots. Brush on a ridge-filling base coat, and let it dry for two minutes.

7. Finger paint. Apply one thin coat of your favorite polish, wait three minutes, then apply a second thin coat. Make sure to polish the very tips— and even the underside of the nail—to prevent premature chipping.

8. Top it off. Brush on a clear top coat, and let the nails dry for at least twenty minutes—but two hours is best. (Quick-dry top coats, while convenient, are more prone to chipping.)

9. Mend your mistakes. Dip a sponge-tip eye-shadow applicator or a cotton-wrapped orangewood stick in polish remover, and carefully clean up smudged skin.
