One Year Later

“You’re tiara’s a little jacked,” Flora said, reaching over and straightening the over-the-top headpiece on her twin’s head.

“Thanks.” Fauna giggled nervously and then put her index finger underneath Flora’s eye, vanishing the tears that were threatening to ruin her make-up.

“What the hell is up with us?” Flora laugh-snorted, taking Fauna’s trembling hands in hers. “It’s not like we haven’t done this already.”

“Yeah, but last time we were pretty sure we were going to die the next day, so, strangely enough, there was less risk.”

Flora rolled her eyes at her sister and went to the window. Down below, the farmhouse lawn was filled to capacity with wedding guests. They mingled and milled about in the rows of chairs facing the gigantic red and white rose-laden archway.

The string quartet seated off to the side poised their bows above their instruments, paused a moment, and then began playing. Clark and Julian took their places on either side of Cara, who was officiating. Standing up with Clark were Guardian Aiden and Damian; and with Julian, his twin, Guardian August, and Alexander – who’d managed to squeeze their nuptials into his busy schedule as the vice president and figurehead of the Free Earth.

A quick knock came at Flora and Julian’s bedroom door and then Abel stuck his head into the room, grinning from ear to ear. “Ready, ladies? It’s not too late. I can always transport you to Alexander’s place in the city,” he joked.

The sisters walked to him and each took an arm. “Nah, we’re ready,” Fauna said.

“Good.” Abel led them toward the staircase. “Cara would’ve killed me for screwing up her first wedding as a priestess.”

After some maneuvering, due to the fact that Fauna’s dress made the three of them too wide to descend the staircase together, they stood in the sitting room waiting for their cue. Presley, Liesel, Meagan and Hilde filed in from the kitchen – all looking beautiful in strapless red satin gowns.

“Any aisle-walking tips for them, Liese?” Presley asked, kissing her wife’s temple...and subsequently getting a corkscrew curl stuck to her lips.

Liesel pulled back slightly from Presley and fixed her wife’s lipstick with her the pad of her thumb. “Well, lucky for you two, you’ve only got the one strapping male to escort you.” She grinned. “It will be over before you know it. Just appreciate all that it took for you to get here. You’re surrounded by family and friends who only want your happiness.”

“Fauna, finger, eyes, again, now please.” Flora sniffed. She’d turned into such a girl. It was all the weddings. First Cara and Abel, then Hilde and Dame, then Presley and Liesel...now her and Fauna. Another year or so and Meagan and Alexander would be surely join the club.

Who would’ve thought that out of something as horrible as a rebellion against the Gods that all of them would find mates and a family with each other?

Abel patted her arm. “Just let the tears flow, dear. You’ve earned them.”

Julian smiled at Presley and Liesel as they took their places beside him.
