Chapter Six

Altered Skies

Just hours before we parted from the abandoned Store on the edge of the Highway leaving behind the man and woman in their small wooden cabin, I could still smell his scent on me as I dug my fangs into his throat – the image I can’t erase from my mind. I keep playing it over and over again, letting the memory taunt me into believing that I am weaker than I think I am…. Alexander pulled me from him and got me away from it before I could kill that man and he had no issue with the blood. It didn’t seem to shake him as it did me.

My mind continued to relay the same question over again: What have I become?

After over a hundred years I still find myself asking the same questions over again unsure of the answer and too afraid to find out. It is no secret that I hate what I have become and have no memory of who I once was and I think that is what scares me the most.

We crossed the bridge into a deserted town rolling past a whole lot of nothing. I couldn’t say much about what we had just drove into seeing as it probably would be the first place I would go if I was trying to hide. Abandoned vehicles lay spawned out with rust covering their pores. The grass was yellow and even the surrounding trees looked like a tornado got to them before we got here, broken and discolored. Rey surveyed our surroundings warily, his body tense. I understood how he felt – abandon town just off an old abandon highway? There is no way that these shattered houses held nothing – somewhere nestled in the darkness of them holds scavengers – human or not. Stryker slowed his speed as we edged around each vehicle carefully. My eyes run over the windows of each one, running over their dusty windows and lifeless metal.

My skin crawled.

The back window of the truck slid open as Rey stuck his head through the gap, “Any idea where we’re at?”

Stryker grunts, “We’re almost there, but keep your eyes peered. The suns down, anything could be out here.”

He eases around the bumpy seal coat, most hidden from the light glow of the yellow street lights. The mood hung ahead, its small glare the only thing you can see in the altered sky above. A large sign sat crooked on a wooden gate just ahead of us that read NO TRASPASSING. A red X has been sprayed through the words almost like it was tampered with. We passed through the gate falling a thin empty road. The first houses that we encountered were small, hidden by the darkness that they were barely able to be noticed, surrounded by a large field that held horse stalls and a barn in the back. Each on that we passed looked different than the one before – houses, schools, restaurants, a never ending row of abandoned places all covered in weeds and musk.
