Following this experience, he transferred to the University of South Dakota; however, his situation there did not improve. He reported, “Too many mornings, I awoke with a blinding hangover, having slept through one class and unprepared for the next. I’d look into the mirror and resolve to straighten out immediately” (Brokaw, 2002, p. 217). Unfortunately, Brokaw’s resolve would last only until an invitation to another party arrived. Halfway through his second semester as a sophomore, Tom received a private dinner invitation at the home of W. O. “Bill” Farber, a legendary political science professor with a history of mentoring many of the state’s leading politicians and statesmen. Brokaw (2002) reflected on the significance of that evening with Dr. Farber:

After an agreeable dinner, Bill turned to me and cheerfully began a conversation that saved my life. He said, “Tom, I’ve been thinking about you.” “You have?” I was secretly delighted at being on Farber’s agenda. But then he went on, “Yes,” he said, “I think you should drop out of school. Get all of this wine, women, and song out of your system and come back when you’ll do yourself some good, your parents, and this school.” (p. 218)
