Critics of this now globally dominant ideology hold that it (neo-liberalism) serves the economic and political interests of the powerful global capitalist class whilst the poor and dependent at home and abroad are the ones who suffer most at its hands. As evidence of the more problematic aspects of neo-liberalism we can point to the global economic crisis resulting from deregulated financial markets, the continued exploitation of workers in cheap labour economies and the retreat of the welfare state in Europe and the USA. The deregulation of the media industry and its domination by a handful of multimedia conglomerates raises serious questions for contemporary society. Critics, rightly, point to the way in which commercial concerns override all others and they hold that it has resulted in the number and range of critical voices that we see or hear about in the mainstream media.
