Two stanzas of ten-syllable lines each with the same verso tronco rhyme at the end (“palpitar,” “spiegar”) are followed by a middle section in seven-syllable ones, then a two-line envoi; the middle section and envoi both end with a verso tronco rhyme. Those ten-syllable lines have a clear influence on Mozart’s gushing melody (which, indeed, is inconceivable without them). But the poetic form of the aria also has other rhetorical and musical consequences that need exploring in some detail.
