The newspaper announced that Wilson had narrowly held his presidency. The opposing party was demanding a recount of the votes. Brandon was curious as to how things would turn out. There had been many who thought Wilson would lose the election. Those folks wanted to go to war and help their European family and allies. Brandon had hoped the war would be done by now. Far too many people were losing their lives.

Scanning the front page, Brandon saw an article that immediately caught his attention.

Villa Captures Parral, Chihuahua

That was hundreds of miles away. If Villa had captured that city, he could hardly be destroying railroad track in New Mexico. Brandon frowned and read further. It was clear that Villa was busy on the other side of the border. He wasn’t in the United States, and, from the sounds of it, hadn’t been in some time.

The thought was perplexing. Everyone had been certain that Villa was responsible for everything. Since the raid on Columbus in March, Villa had been blamed for every missing chicken, torn-up track, and death along the Rio Grande. Brandon had thought it silly to blame one man and his group of revolutionaries for everything, especially when no one had seen them. Not even the army had been able to figure out where Villa had gone.

Out of habit, Brandon walked by Cassie’s house. He liked to check up on her and make sure everything was all right. Since her bones had mended, he didn’t have a real excuse to stop by. Unless he admitted to the feelings he’d begun to have for her, and he wasn’t about to do that.

To his surprise, the laughter of several men rang out from Cassie’s house. He decided if she already had company, it couldn’t hurt to impose himself and see what was happening. He’d just tell her that he had returned from down south. He could offer her his newspaper, even though he hadn’t finished reading it. He could ask if she needed anything done. There were three perfectly good excuses for stopping by.

Music started inside the house, and someone began to sing an old Mexican folk song. Brandon knocked on the front door but doubted anyone would hear him. When no one responded, he let himself in and immediately joined the celebration.

“Brandon, how nice to see you,” Cassie said, raising her voice to be heard. “Come join us. We’re having our own little fiesta. Some of your boys wanted to tell me more of their stories, so they brought quite the arrangement of food.”

“Boss!” Javier said, jumping up. “When did you get back to town?”

The music stopped, and everyone’s gaze went to Brandon.

“Just a little while ago.” He had been busy down near one of the stops on the main line, discussing the possibility of a spur line to connect with another town.

“We’re having a fiesta,” Max said. “Come and join us.”

All around the room, agreements and comments in Spanish filled the air, and Brandon nodded. “I’ll stay. Sure.”

The boys wanted to know what Brandon had found in his inspections.
