“Honey, is everything okay?” Mama asked as she sipped an old-fashioned egg cream soda from Primrose’s Drug Store. After all these years, they still had a full-service counter devoted to ice cream treats and the original light blue and chrome bar stools to boot. He hadn’t had quite as much one-on-one time with Mama since he’d been home. The website and marketing plan was taking up a chunk—which he’d been thoroughly enjoying. Juliet was going to love it. He loved it.

What he didn’t love was how much things slowed down here in Honeyhaven and in the South in general. Time seemed to stretch, opening up doors to chat with neighbors and sip sweet tea on the porch, time to fish and stop in for ice cream sodas.

And time to think.

Which might not be to Bowie’s advantage. When things moved fast, he could stick to his plan. Glance at it and keep forging ahead. But here…here…things became muddied and muddled. Like one of those puzzles Juliet left out for guests to work on. A bunch of pieces all over a large table with no map or guide to show him how to fit it together. Last Sunday, something had dislodged and bubbled to his heart while pushing Juliet on the swing, and he couldn’t define it. He’d avoided her for four days working to batten down the hatches on it, and then Friday had come, and he was sure things were square. He’d even called Sonya more than their one-a-day routine.

But then Juliet showed up in those crazy shorts and boots, full of zest and contagious enthusiasm. Her bare leg had touched his, and her fingers had innocently grazed his own. And everything he’d attempted to lock down busted wide open, spinning him dizzy until he’d almost done the unthinkable.

He’d almost kissed her.

He’d certainly wanted to kiss her. To sample and savor her lips, and that feeling tried to pull some kind of memory from him. It hovered on the edge of recall, but he couldn’t bring it into focus. There had been no point dwelling on it or forcing it to come. It didn’t matter.

He loved Sonya. Honest to goodness he did. Then what was happening to him now? Clearly something was.

“Bowie? You’re a million miles away. What’s eatin’ at ya, hon?” Mama asked.

He couldn’t tell Mama he was having feelings for another woman while engaged to another. It would only stir up bad memories for her. Show her that her son was more like his father than his mother. It curdled in his gut and ate him up. “Thinking about the wedding and the future.”

“I remember my wedding day.” She fondly examined her wedding ring. She hadn’t worn it on the proper finger since Dad left, but it had been on her right ring finger all these years. “Your daddy was so handsome.” Sadness laced her words. Mama was a true example of forgiveness. Bowie had a little harder time. Dad was off living a life with a new family.
