“What’s your favorite color?” Juliette asked before she took a bite of her chicken.

They had spent the next half an hour trying to recover from their mind blowing encounter under the tree. And after that came the hunger for more than each other’s bodies. In that, Juliette decided to learn more about the man who’d chased her for years but did not reveal much about himself.

Cole spoke around a mouthful of food and answered, “Dark royal blue.”

“Your favorite book?” she asked.

“The Catcher in the Rye.”

“Favorite all time movie?”

“Hmmm, that’s a toughie,” Cole responded. “It’s a tie between Aliens with Sigourney Weaver and any of the Alien versus Predator movies. And, oh yeah, any of the Halloweens with Mike Myers.”

Juliette stared with her mouth open, the last bite of her chicken forgotten.

Cole looked at her surprised expression and asked, “What?”

“I cannot believe you are a gore monger.” Juliette grinned.

He defended himself. “Hey, I like other stuff.”

“Like what?” Juliette asked.

“Sci-fi stuff,” he muttered under his breath.

Juliette cupped her ear. “I didn’t catch that, what?”

“I said science fiction, okay? Like Star Trek,” he almost shouted.

Juliette burst out in giggles. “You’re kidding? I can see you now dressed all trekkie. I thought you were going to say stuff like those documentaries on Peruvian mummies or something.”

“Sorry to disappoint you, Jewels, but I have no interest in mummies of any kind.” Cole grinned.

“Oh I’m not disappointed. I’m just glad I have someone to watch stuff with now.” Juliette returned his smile. “Being an only child sucked sometimes. You do not want to try to watch Mike Myers with Poppa Moose. It was an experience.”

This time, Cole started laughing. Juliette listened with enjoyment because it was the first time she could ever remember hearing him laugh out loud.

“That must have been a sight to see.” Cole wiped his eyes. “What did he do?”

Juliette recounted the story and, by the time she was finished, they were both laughing. “He asked questions, Cole, tons of them. About the mask and the knife. You’re supposed to be scared when watching stuff like that. With my dad it’s all technical and you forget to be scared because you are answering so many questions.”

“Your dad is something else,” Cole replied.

Their laughter trailed off into silence before Juliette said, “This is nice. I feel like we know each other way better now.”

“And that is what you wanted to make you happy?” Cole asked softly.

“That and more,” she answered truthfully. “You know from the time you started working for my dad, I’ve had the hots for you.”

“There wasn’t much about me to have the hots for at that point. An ex-cop who was burnt out and jaded,” Cole said.

“Are you still jaded?”

“Not as much as I used to be. I guess chasing you down every other year helped mellow me out.”

Juliette teased, “And here I thought you wanted to be with me. All this time it was the chase that called to you.”

Cole’s tone became serious. “It was always you, Jewels.
