Chapter Nine

Rus had insisted on accompanying Polly to check on Uncle Allen. They had both been drinking and it wasn’t safe to go alone, he’d said. Polly understood the sentiment, but the likelihood of running into another traveler on the road was about as good as being struck by lightning. She was more concerned with Connor’s budding resentment towards Rus. They had gotten along so well that first day. Polly’s head was still buzzing as she fired up her motorcycle and set off for the farm house. Dusk enveloped the world in a haze of pink and orange. It would be dark by the time they arrived. Polly would have much rather stayed with Rus in the dimly lit bar, talking and kissing and whatever else might happen, but she liked Uncle Allen. He was one of the few people who could make her laugh, and if he needed help, she wanted to be there.

Rus followed close behind. He, too, was feeling the effects of the alcohol. It had been a good day spent with Polly, sharing his secrets with her. It was much more fun going to his favorite places with her by his side, something he could get used to if she would let him.

The sun dipped below the horizon as they approached Connor’s house. Rus’ heart sank a little when they passed the mound of bodies where he had tried to help the family two days ago. It felt like so long ago since that incident. His time spent with Polly seem to simultaneously last forever and go too quickly. The smell of rotting flesh told them they were near and Rus remembered the moat of zombies surrounding their formidable wall. He pulled behind Polly as they approached the gate, careful to stay clear of any flailing arms. The cacophony of zombie growls and heavy breathing enveloped the evening air as they waited for entry. Polly revved her engine outside until the gate slowly began to open. Phil closed the gate behind them and took off running towards the house. They sped down the driveway and parked beside the porch, where Connor stood waiting.

“What’s he doing here?” Connor asked, cutting his eyes and tilting his head towards Rus.

“We were hanging out together,” said Polly coolly. She didn’t have time for Connor’s jealous antics.

“I thought you were out getting supplies,” he said stiffly.

“Something came up. What’s wrong with Uncle Allen?” This was not the time to beat around the bush.

“It’s his heart,” Phil interrupted, out of breath from his run. His khakis were covered in dried blood. Rus wondered what they could have been doing all day. “Mom thought he had enough medication to get through the month at least, but either she misplaced it or counted wrong, because when she went to give it to him this morning, there wasn’t any. He went and sat down after breakfast and hasn’t been able to get up since.”

“But he seemed fine this morning. He was telling jokes and laughing.” Polly couldn’t believe he would get sick so quickly.
