New Beginnings

When school started in the fall at Kellogg, I made a concerted effort to maintain the image of the carefree Josh McDowell—student leader and perennial party animal of the sophomore class. The first paper I wrote that semester was entitled “How Michigan Can Become Debt Free.” My premise called for the state to sell the Upper Peninsula to Wisconsin and legalize prostitution in the capital of Lansing, taxing the proceeds. My statistics showed that the cash from the land sale and the taxable income generated from legalized prostitution would put Michigan in the black. The professor rewarded me with an A!

For all my bluster and bravura, however, I still had to live with myself. I knew my heart was divided, that I was a hypocrite. When I was sure my friends weren’t watching, I would talk with the Christian students about their faith. I made it clear I was only inquiring about things, nothing more, but because I knew more about the subject than many of them, I often had to answer my own questions! On occasion, I even attended church with members of the group. But I held back from making a commitment. I wanted to believe as they believed, but my mind told me to stay away from Christianity like the plague. I had lost my childhood and teen years to what I thought of as divine indifference. I wasn’t going to wreck my future over divine interference.

One day I was walking across the commons on a Friday afternoon when I heard my name being called.

“Hey, Josh!”

It was two of my friends, Sam Collins and Dewey Longworth. “What’s buzzin’, cuzzin? Comin’ to the bash tonight?” Sam asked.

“What bash?” I asked.

“Out at the Lake House.” replied Sam.

“All the new freshman chicks are gonna be there.” gushed Dewey. “You’ll have your pick of the litter!”

“Naw, that’s all right. I’m going out with someone tonight.”

“Well, bring her along too,” said Sam. “The more the merrier.”

“Just who is this hot babe we’ve been hearin’ about?” chimed in Dewey. “You jacketed or what?”

I looked at my two friends. “Her name is Lynne.” Sam and Dewey waited for me to say more. “Anyway, I gotta split,” I said. “I’m late for class.”

“Hey, hold on, daddy-o!” said Sam, hurrying after me. “I heard you met this girl at a church. Is that true?”

“Who told you that?”

“That’s the word around town, hipster.”

“Well, you know what they say.”

“What’s that?”

“The cutest chicks are the ones that go to church.”

“Hey, I wanna go, then!” said Dewey. “What’re the show times?”

Sam turned on Dewey. “It’s not a movie theater, you kook. Didn’t you go to church growin’ up?”

“Yeah,” said Dewey defensively, “but that was a long time ago.”

Sam shook his head. “So where is this church?” he asked as the three of us continued to walk along.

“Factoryville.”

Sam and Dewey stopped, giving each other confused looks.

“Factoryville?”

“Where’s that?”

“Look it up on the map,” I shouted back at them, practically running away.

Factoryville was actually a meandering road in the small town of Athens, located about twenty miles south of Battle Creek.
