The onset of autumn ended the battalion’s recuperation in Artois. In October the 8 th division was transferred back to the Somme as part of the XIV Corps (Lieutenant General Lord Cavan) of General Rawlinson’s 4 th Army. Lieutenant Colonel Jack records that the 2 nd West Yorks had made good use of their time. ‘Out of 90 days spent in the Loos Salient after their fearful losses on 1 st July, 2 nd West Yorkshire has been in the trenches for 70; it is nevertheless in a good state. Discipline and morale are satisfactory … All duties mentioned have been performed for trifling casualties in action…’ (Abridged).
