The Universe

We challenge you to show us a child who isn’t interested in space – the vastness, the possibilities, the unknowns. Space is still the final frontier (unless, of course, we do find that parallel universes exist, in which case there are infinite frontiers). Are there aliens out there? Does our smallness in the vast expanse of space make us more or less significant? Astrophysicist Carl Sagan, in his book Pale Blue Dot, reflects on the image of earth taken from the edges of the solar system, in which it appears as a speck of dust in a beam of light. He contemplates the energy expended on this “barely distinguishable pixel” in battles for power and supremacy and concludes that, “There is perhaps no better demonstration of the folly of human conceit than this distant image of our tiny world. To me, it underscores our responsibility to deal more kindly with one another, and to preserve and cherish the pale blue dot, the only home we’ve ever known.”1

In this chapter, we too explore our place in the universe and on our own planet, in both real and imagined contexts.
