Being Part of the Team: Collaborative Communication

If we accept that all effective music creativity is ultimately the outcome of a collaboration between, at minimum, addresser and addressee, it follows that for music performance to be achieved something needs to be communicated by one to the other. Addresser and addressee may both, of course, be performers. Asaf Sirkis describes something of the process of intra-performer communication below:

You like their playing, you like their sense of musicality, and their musical sensitivity and they like yours, and . . . when you’re playing you’re communicating rather than just doing your own thing.
